For the 97th season of San Francisco Opera, opening night consisted of an exhilarating production of “Roméo et Juliette” with a stellar cast. Nadine Sierra and Pene Pati starred as the tragic lovers and Lucas Meachem sang the role of Mercutio. Yves Abel masterfully conducted and Jean-Louis Grinda directed.
Lucas received the following acclaim:
Baritone Lucas Meachem gave a commanding, finely detailed performance as Mercutio
San Francisco Chronicle
Baritone Lucas Meachem was a standout as Romeo’s fellow Montague Mercutio, sporting dramatic heft and robust resonance, especially in his Act 1 aria “Mab, la reine des mensonges.”
San Francisco Examiner
Meachem’s lyric baritone continues to grow in power. His effective acting, beautiful French, convincing swordplay and Gallic demeanor made me regret that Mercutio is a shorter role. He has successfully performed one of the most iconic French roles, Athanaël In Massenet’s ‘Thaïs’, to great acclaim.
